Conversation Hearts DIY

Ingredients

1 tsp unflavored gelatin

1 tsp light corn syrup

1/4 cup water

1 lb powdered sugar, plus extra for dusting

assorted food colorings and flavorings (if desired)

heart-shaped cookie cutter

Directions: Combine the gelatin, water, and corn syrup in a small bowl and mix. Microwave 20 seconds. Pour this mixture into a bowl. Add 1 cup of the powdered sugar to the bowl and mix with a beater or stand mixer until the sugar is combined. Add the remaining powdered sugar 1 cup at a time, mixing until incorporated, and repeat until the 1 pound of powdered sugar is used up. Dust a flat work surface with the extra powdered sugar and scrape the candy dough out onto the surface. Split the dough into six pieces. Add the food coloring and desired flavoring to each piece until it is well-incorporated. Flatten each piece. Use the heart cookie cutter to cut out hearts, placing the cut-outs on a parchment paper lined baking sheet. Roll up the scraps and cut out more candies. Let the candies dry for 24-48 hours. Use red food colorings and a toothpick to write messages on the hearts. Enjoy!
